How to be a great public speaker

Chris Anderson provides a very insightful speech regarding Ted Talks and how to be a great public speaker. While listening to his speech, there are several lessons that I garnered. One of the lessons that I drew from this speech is that there is no formula to be a great public speaker or to give an outstanding speech. However, there are several common things that you can find among great public speakers and fantastic talks (Anderson, 2016).

One of the things that are very important when giving a speech is to have a great idea. Having a great idea helps a speaker to grasp the attention of the audience and attract all of them to buy his perception of the world around them. It was also worth noting the fact that different people around the world have different perspectives on various subjects (Anderson, 2016). This is an indication that what pleases one person cannot be negatively perceived by another person. Therefore, what differentiates great speakers from the other speakers is the ability to engage diverse groups of people into buying the idea. Thus, the primary task of a speaker should build an idea into the minds of the audience.

It was very insightful of Anderson noting that speakers must limit their speech into one central idea. Focusing on one idea gives a speaker the chance to explore an issue extensively (Anderson, 2016). I will definitely apply this technique in my future speeches. When presenting a speech involving different subjects, I will always find an idea that cuts through all the issues and incline all the topics within the speech in that one idea. Another lesson that I will use in my future speeches is developing curiosity among my audience. This can be attained by asking questions or narrating a story to the audience, one that everyone among the audience can relate (Anderson, 2016).

Moreover, it is essential to build an idea for a speech around the things that the audience relate. Many times people forget that when presenting a speech, the audience is the key focus and not themselves. Therefore, I will ensure that in my future speech presentations, I will be focusing on the things that are of interest to the target audience.

On the other hand, according to an article by Watt (2011), for a speaker to present a great speech, it is essential that they provide support to the ideas that they present. Therefore, it is imperative for a speaker to conduct relevant and sufficient research on the subject. From her article, I learned that there are numerous sources that one can use to get appropriate research materials.

In the past, I only about Ted Talks, but I never took the time to listen to one. However, after listening to the speech presented by Anderson, I have developed immense interest in Ted Talks, and I will be a regular listener to these speeches. I think that the speeches delivered in Ted Talk are very informative, and one can learn a great deal out of them.
