There are thousands, if not millions, of websites on the internet. The main goal of any website is to sell a product. Let’s say you sell baby products; toys, potties, clothes, cots and so on. So you open a website. To make more sales, you need to increase the visibility of the website. How do you do that? Think of the words/phrases that parents are likely to use to search for such products in the internet. In this case, phrases like ‘baby cots Nairobi’ and ‘baby clothes Nairobi’ are likely to be used.
To make sure that your website is ranked high by google, so that it can be readily visible to searchers, you’re required to include these phrases in your website. The only way to include these phrases is to write articles that contain these phrases multiple times. You will have articles titled ‘Things to Look for when Buying Baby’s Clothes’ ‘Factors to Consider when Choosing Toys’ and so on and include the key words.
This example shows you the source of the articles we write online. Business owners want articles for their websites. Articles come in all sorts of topics including health, relationships, parenting, legal matters, technology and so on.
Important terms in article writing:
- SEO writing: This is an abbreviation for Search Engine Optimization. It means that the article must have enough key word; so that it can appear among the top ones when searched on google. Every website owner wants to be ranked high by google, so that it can appear in the first page when the keyword is searched. This means more visitors visit the website; and they get to sell more of their products.
- Key word: This is the word or phrase that is likely to be searched on google. You must therefore include it in the article multiple times. It also gives you the subject of your article.
- Keyword density: This means the number of times the keyword should be repeated in the article. If a 500 word article requires 1% keyword density; this means it should be repeated 5 times. This is the average density if the client does not specify.
- Tone: Articles require either a professional or friendly tone. A friendly tone is conversational, like talking to a friend. You mostly make use of ‘you’ just as am doing in this article. Professional tone is more formal. Just talk about the subject matter without addressing the reader.
- Fluff: Using excess unnecessary words. Clients prefer if you get straight to the point without using too many filler words. Sometimes they feel you just want to attain the stipulated word count without caring about the content; and that can earn you a rejection.
- Re-writing: If you’re required to rewrite, you don’t research anything. You simply take the given article and write it in different words, and in a different order. You can read the info, understand it then explain in your own words.
How to Research and Write
Copy-paste the keyword phrase on to google search box. From the previews, click on the website that seems to be offering the most comprehensive information. For instance, let’s say that your keyword phrase is ‘natural remedies of arthritis’. You’ll see several websites offering that information. Don’t open just one; open about 3 in different tabs. Look for those that offer separate numbered points. Read the information from different sites and write it down in your own words. Once you’ve attained the required number of words; you can then type it on Ms Word.
Do not copy entire sentences as they appear on the internet. On iwriter and other sites, the article is passed through ‘copyscape’ before its submitted, where you can be penalized for copy-pasting from the internet.
On iwriter, once you identify an article that you can write, click on ‘write article’. That’s after checking out the ‘special instructions’ and ensuring you understand them. Once you click on ‘write article’ a page is opened and the stopwatch starts counting. Do your research, write and type in the time given. Should the article prove harder than you expected; you can simply cancel and go back to the list where you can take another one.
Once you paste an article onto the iwriter pad, go through it to ensure that every bit was pasted. For some reason, it does not accept bullet marks. Use dashes (-) instead.

Sometimes a client will see a good article in the internet; and will want one like that for his/her site. Of course it’s not allowed to copy-paste content from one website to the other. Solution? To re-write the article. Give the same message, but in different words. In most cases you do not have to rewrite sentence by sentence. You can read a whole paragraph, get the message and write it in your own words. In rewriting, no additional research is required unless the client instructs you to add some information. Make use of the ‘Synonym’ tool in Ms word. Highlight the word, right-click and look for alternative words (with the same meaning) under synonyms. - Evaluate Requester Information
Every project provides valuable information to the requester. Give preference to those with an approval rate of 70% and above. You can’t choose one with an approval rate of 20% and expect a miracle! A requester review of 4 stars and above is a good pick. Go for one with a short approval wait time if you want your work to be reviewed fast. Here is a screen-shot of a promising requester.
- Pay Attention to Special Instructions
Friendly tone articles are easier to write than those requiring a professional tone. I prefer articles with brief special instructions. There are those who give a whole page! I avoid them; as it’s easy to make a mistake and get rejected.
3. Contact Requester
Every article provides this link; but most of us hardly ever use it. I agree that it’s not practical to initiate dialogue with the requester before you write, as it’s likely that the article will be picked up by another writer as you await reply. I mostly use it right after submitting an article. For instance, I wrote an article where the requester wanted bullet points included. For some reason, the system could not accommodate bullets so I used numbers instead. Immediately after submitting, I sent a message to the requester explaining my decision. He understood and approved the article with top rating. In the absence of that message, he’d have probably assumed that I ignored the instructions and rejected the article. If you feel you have an issue to explain, message the requester as the article is awaiting approval. I also do the same when I have doubts on the article I’ve written. I say something like ‘I hope I have met your expectations. If not, am open to corrections..’ It helps!
- Write Short and Simple Articles
To build your rating fast, go for short articles. Every article attracts a single rating no matter the length. Since you’d like to move to the next level as soon as possible, you’re better off with three 300 word articles as opposed to one 1000 word article which will take roughly the same time to write. Go for generic titles such as ‘symptoms of kidney disease’ as those are the same everywhere. Articles that limit you to a certain locality such as ‘Chicago car insurance laws’ are tricky. Adhere to the keyword density given. 1% means 5 in 500 words and so on. Avoid mentioning brand name unless otherwise stated.
- Avoid Copy-paste
Iwriter has a copy-scape software, and should you try to submit non-original material, it’ll be highlighted and you’ll be fined for it. Your account can even be suspended. You cannot pick entire sentences from other websites. You have to rewrite them. Better still, master the content and reproduce it.
- Write at Night
Jobs are scarce during the day and increase towards evening. By late night; they’re so many you’ll be spoilt for choice. According to my experience; weekdays have more work than weekends. See if you can reorganize your schedule and work mostly at night.
- Patience and Persistence
In an effort to earn more, some people will write even those articles that they don’t understand well. You’d rather write a few quality articles and earn a good rating. Do not allow disappointments to kill your zeal.
- Create a Rapport with Requesters
Build a network of your best requesters. Communicate to them often. This will earn you more work and better ratings.
5 things nobody told me about iwriter
Here are some things I had to discover myself; mostly the hard way.
- Special requests can be sent to a group of writers. The sight of that yellow star always excited me, I have a project all to myself, or do i? In a number of occasions I received special requests, with about 5 days reserved time. Wow. No hurry, is there? So I take my time preparing to write and by the time I log in again; gone! What happened? The requester changed his mind? Apparently not. The special request was for a group of writers; and the rest were swifter than I was. Now every time I receive a special request, I immediately contact the requester and ask if the project is for me alone or a group of writers.
- You can only pick an article twice. So I pick an article and half-way through the work, am distracted by some other duties. By the time I get back online, there’re only a few minutes left. So I cancel and quickly go back and select it again. Now I have 3 hours once again. As it turns out, I get late again but this time I have done most of the work. I try to pull the same trick as before, and to my shock, my chances have ran out. The system tells me ‘You have selected that article too many times…’ or something of the sort. With that, all the work I had done goes down the drain. Be warned.
- Incase the computer goes off unexpectedly due to a blackout or something, the article still remains in your custody for the reserved time. Once you get back online, you will still find it in the draft section.
- It’s easier to type your article on Ms Word/Office and paste it; despite the instructions stating otherwise. There’s no penalty for that. However, some special characters like bullets and even numbers may not be transferred, so you need to look at the article once pasted to make sure its in order.
- Not all articles will be reviewed. The requester is given 3 days (72 hours) to review the article. After that time is up, the system approves the article automatically without a rating and the money checks into your account.
With relative effort; iwriter makes a great side hustle. I have had my good moments; where requesters are satisfied and the reviews are glowing.
On the other hand, I still get caught off-guard every once in a while. Here is a case in point where a requester whom I knew well and had worked for in many occasions suddenly rejected one of my articles, went ahead to ridicule my points and even conclude with LOL! I was so pissed off I wanted to throw a stone!! See how he had given me a 5 star and an exceptional review on a previous article, and now this?? Mind you, his approval rating is above 80%.
This shows that every once in a while; things get unpredictable. Allow me to share the article that was rejected; and you be the judge!

There’s also the option of being employed by other writers in order to gain some experience. Ultimately; you’ll want your own accounts so that you can manage your time as you wish.
Odesk, Elance and Freelancer are bidding websites that provide additional opportunities for writers. However, the number of freelancers is higher than the jobs available, leading to intense competition.
Elance and Odesk operate in a somewhat similar manner. Once you create your account; select the Writing and Translation Category. While searching for a job, you can narrow down further depending on the budget, job end date and so on. After this you can place your bid. Make sure your cover letter and profile are impressive. Do not copy-paste the same cover letter for every job. Make a new one for each that highlights your skillset for the job. You can also add some samples to enhance your proposal. Set your price at a standard rate or slightly lower. Consider the client budget as well. Once you sign up on Elance and Odesk, you get a certain number of connects or quota respectively that will help you with your applications.
Ensure that your profile is complete and updated with all the required information. Do not charge too little for your work; otherwise you’ll be stuck with underpaying clients. Evaluate client information, especially regarding the verification of payments. Positive feedback from other writers is also a good sign.
On oDesk, look in the right sidebar under “About the Client.” You’ll see “Payment Method Verified” in green text. On Elance, you’ll see four small circles next to the client’s name. If they’re verified, you’ll see $ in the first circle, and the more green circles you see, the more projects a client has filled on the site.
On Elance, clicking on “Client Info” takes you to a profile page with the client’s projects, including feedback from previous contractors. On oDesk, you’ll see a star rating under “About the Client” on each job page.
Ask all the necessary questions regarding the project to ensure that you’re certain of what you’re getting into. Bidding sites can be slow in the beginning. You may take some time to win the first bid. However, if you remain consistent and deliver good quality work at every given opportunity, you will soon be getting regular jobs. Happy bidding!!
