Passing Grades differ from one institution to another and from course to course. Therefore, what really is a passing grade?

In simple terms, a passing grade is the overall score that is required to mark a student as competent in a particular course or subject.

Macmillan dictionary defines passing grade as;

A grade that a student needs to reach in order to succeed in an examination or course.

The grading system used in an institution mainly depends on the institution itself, or its faculty. Institutions have different grading systems. This might even tone down to professors having their own individual grading system.

Some professors may grade on a curve, thereby changing a normal grading scale to fit it to how the majority of students are performing. Others may stick to the standard grading scale of 90%+ being an A, 80-89% as a B, etc.

While some professors will give more consideration to course assignments, some will place more weight on exams. The passing grade therefore tends to differ depending on where you are. Some countries use a percentage system while others rely on a number of systems.

A lot of people research about passing grades in college or university. In higher institutions, grades are important as they represent how well one has performed. Performance in the exams is quite important. No matter what your future plans are, it is important to do your best in your college classes.

Your grades are one of the primary considerations because they show how well you understand the material. Grades are also reflective of your effort and dedication to a course. This is especially true of those courses that relate directly to your major.

While a 60% may be considered a passing grade in most institutions, you will want to aim higher for a number of reasons. One of them is to increase the quality point. At most universities in the U.S., for example, your grades don’t stand on their own.

Every so often, they correspond to a quality point. When you solely pass classes, but not highly, your GPA will be affected. That’s why it’s always important to do your best and ask for help when you need it.

Getting high grades is extremely important if;

  • You are considering a job: Some job interviewers may ask for your GPA or consider it during the application process from your resume. This is likely true if your degree is directly correlated to your work. It is even more important if you lack experience in the field. Therefore, you may be relying on your academic experience to set you apart from the competition.
  • You are applying for graduation: one of the most important factors that the admissions committee will consider is your grades from undergraduate school. The admissions process will likely involve more than just grades, like letters of recommendation, standardized test scores, a personal statement, and more.

Getting a passing grade in a university or college is attainable. Considerably, you will want to aim higher than just passing. You can rely on study resources and helpful tricks, and help from your fellow peers and professors if need be.
