MTA Tower Operator Updated Study Guide

1. ABSOLUTE BLOCK: A block that may be occupied by only one train at a time. 2. REROUTING: Diverting a train from its normal route because of blockage or unusual occurrence 3. REVENUE TRAIN: A train that carries passengers 4. TIMETABLE: Shows the time the train is due to arrive and leave from each listed terminal, arriving and/or departing times at intermediate stations , running times, headways, and train routes 5. GAP STATIONS: Key locations between the terminals of a line where trains are recorded as they pas by, can be properly spaced and can be held for connections 6. RELAY TRACK: A track outside the station limits on which a train is placed when being relayed or "swung" from one station to another station 7. SIGNALYELLOW OVER GREEN: Proceed on the main route, be prepared to stop at the next signal 8. SUBDIVISION "A" SIGNAL DISPLAYINGYELLOW OVER REDWITH AN ILLU- MINATED "S": Approach at allowable speed, then continue on the main route 9. DWARF SIGNAL: A signal with a fixed STOP indication displaying red over red 10. AUTOMATIC SIGNAL: A signal that is controlled by the movement of trains 11. INTERLOCKING SIGNAL: A signal at a fixed location indicating a condition controlling the movement of trains 12. TOWER OPERATORS: (a) Required to familiarize themselves with the rules and regulations (b) train schedules (c) maintain records of all train movements 13. OBSTRUCTION ON TRACK, A TOWER OPERATOR WILL: Notify RCC and display a red signal 14. WITHOUT PROPER AUTHORITY, A TOWER OPERATOR MUST NOT: Re- move authorized appliances from machines 15. TOWER OPERATORS MUST NOTIFY RCC WHEN: (a) unusual conditions (b) unusual intervals bet trains (c) operating part time tower 16. EXPEDITING SERVICE,TOWER OPERATOR MUST: Crank switches, and flag trains 17. TOWER OPERATORS MUST OBSERVE: station platforms and model boards 18. RULE 9.05 (n): "When for any reason it is necessary to divert a train from its regular route, the switch must not be set for the diverging move." 19. TOWER OPERATORS MAYTAKE INSTRUCTION FROM: Dispatchers and as- sistant dispatchers, superintendents RTO 20. WHEN OPERATING AN INTERLOCKING MACHINE, TOWER OPERATORS MUST: Cooperate with Maintainers 21. FROG: Two running rails that intersect 22. TYPE VIII track: Concrete and rubber padding 23. TYPE III track: Used for elevated structures 24. RELAY: to move one or more cars from a particular track onto a relay or main line track and return the car(s) to an adjacent track 25. LIGHT TRAIN: Train consisting of revenue cars operating on the mainline track without any passengers 26. TRANSFERRING CONTROL FROM A LOCAL TOWER TO A MAIN TOWER: - (a) must notify the main tower (b) all signal and switch towers must correspond with main tower (c) Tower Operator must turn transfer key from auxiliary panel 27. CROSSOVER: An arrangement of tow switches used to move a train from one track to another (lcl/exp) and (exp/lcl)
