Directions: This is a 20-item PRACTICE TEST for HOSA members who wish to become familiar with the format of using a grid Scantron answer form.

Please use the sample grid to write and bubble-in your responses, and then check your work.

This format will be used for the Medical Math event at the National Leadership Conference and

MAY be used at your State Leadership Conference (check with your state advisor). There are 50 test items to solve and fill in on the grid, and 10 multi-step tie-breaker questions with fill-in- the-blank responses.

1.        Mark weighed 240 pounds when he started to exercise daily and eat a healthy diet.  After six months he lost 32% of his body weight.  How many pounds did he lose?  (Round to the nearest tenth.)

2.        How many milligrams in 70 mcg? (Round to the nearest hundredth.)

3.        Convert 1030 Fahrenheit to 0Celsius. (Round to the nearest tenth.)

4.        A pathology sample weighs 2 ½ ounces. What is the weight in grams?

5.        Janet wants to donate her hair to Locks of Love, and the minimum length is 10 inches. How long must the donation be in centimeters?  (Round to the nearest tenth.)

6.        A patient is to receive 0.04 gm of the antispasmodic drug loxapine succinate (Loxitane) PO per day in two divided doses. If the drug is available in an oral concentration of 25 mg/ml, how many milliliters should be given per dose?  (Round to the nearest tenth.)

7.        An 88 pound child has an order for pain medication that reads morphine liquid PO 0.2 mg/kg q4h PRN.  How many milliliters per dose would be given if the concentration is 2 mg/ml?

8.        What is the correct fractional equivalent of the ratio 2:7?

9.        Levothyroxine 0.5 mg PO is ordered. It is available in 125 mcg tablets. How many tablets would be needed for one dose?

10.      A vial of dactinomycin reads l.5 mg = 1 ml.  A patient weighing 120 kg is to receive 15 mcg/kg IM.  How many ml of this antibiotic antineoplastic drug should be prepared? (Round to the nearest tenth.)

11.      An order is written for heparin 1500 units/hour. On hand is a 250 ml IV bag of D5W with 25,000 units of heparin. How many milliliters per hour should be infused?

12.      A physician orders a 1000 ml IV bag of D5W with 30 mg of Dilaudid to infuse at

140 ml/hour.  How many milligrams of Dilaudid per hour will the patient receive?  (Round to the nearest tenth.)

13.      A pharmacist poured a 20% NaCl solution into a flask that contained a NaCl solution of an unknown concentration. If the total volume of the mixed solution is 500 ml and its concentration is 5% NaCl, how many milliliters of the 20% NaCl solution was poured into the flask?

14.      A label on a bottle of solution reads 5% dextrose, which means that there are 5 grams of dextrose in how many liters of finished solution? (Round to the nearest tenth.)

15. The physician orders 25 mg of gentamicin IM.  The label says to add 1.3 ml of sterile water to yield 50 mg/1.5 ml.  How many milliliters of reconstituted solution should be given? (Round to the nearest hundredth.)

16. How many grams of a pure drug are needed to prepare 4,000 ml of a 2% neomycin-polymixin B antibiotic solution?

17. How many grams of NaCl are in 45 deciliters of a 30% w/v NaCl solution?
