BSC2346 AP Module 10 Case Study, complete latest guide, 100% correct

Question 1

1 out of 1 points

Edna is a 42-year-old mother of two girls. She has been feeling very sluggish lately and finds it hard to get out of bed in the morning, even after a full night’s sleep. She is fatigued throughout the day and has to compensate with a lot of caffeine. She’s gained about 5 pounds this month, but attributes that to all the workouts she’s been skipping lately. Her partner keeps noticing and mentioning how cold Edna’s hands are, even though it is the middle of summer. Edna sees her doctor to find out what is wrong. Her physician takes her vital signs before doing further testing. Here are her results: BP 124/74, Pulse 52, Temperature 98.2 F, Height 5’8”, and Weight 178 pounds.

Edna’s doctor is worried about her endocrine function. Which of the following glands is most likely causing her symptoms?

Selecte An enlarged thyroid gland is called a goiter. In this case it might be d              called a compensatory goiter. This enlargement is caused by the body

Answer: expecting a certain amount of TSH to be produced, if not recognized as processing enough TSH, the pituitary gland will secrete extra to make up for it. By doing this the thyroid gland is hit with too much TSH and enlarges. If this is left untreated, hypothyroidism symptoms will continue to worsen.

Edna’s test results showed that her T4 level was below normal. Why might her TSH level be elevated?

Selected The thyroid gland produces T4 and in hypothyroidism, T4 production is

Answer:                 less. When the pituitary gland detects that there is a decrease in T4, it will pump out more TSH to tell the thyroid gland to produce more T4. So it would show low levels of T4 with a high level of TSH.

Why would Edna’s doctor inquire about her iodine intake? (Explain why iodine is pertinent in this case and how it affects the thyroid.)

Selected Iodine is necessary in the production of TSH. If the body is lacking

Answer:

iodine, then TSH cannot be created and secreted. Iodine comes in many foods we eat already, or can be added with salt. Our bodies do not make it on its own though, and is needed as an intake. If Edna is not taking in enough iodine, the body will not be able to create TSH and can lead to an enlarged goiter, and hypothyroidism. An increase in iodine would help to reduce this complication.
