Kidney is a bean shaped organ located below rib cage on each side of spine (Leslie & Sajjad, 2021). It is one of the vital organs in the body and it filters blood to remove toxins. Sometime it fails due to various reasons and require transplant. The procedure used to remove the failed kidney and replace it with the new one from the donor is called kidney transplant (Ceska, 2008). The surgery team must prepare the donor and the recipient adequately before performing the procedure. They must also establish the compatibility index to minimize the risk of recipient’s immune system rejecting the new kidney.

- In 1954, a perfect match kidney transplant was done from one twin to another.
- The surgery was done at Peter Brigham in Boston by Joseph E. Murray and colleagues.
- It is regarded as the first truly successful kidney transplant as it was carried out without any immunosuppressive medication

Normally, kidney transplants experience rejection where the recipient’s immune system recognizes the foreign kidney and produce antibodies against it. the patient is given immune suppressive drugs to counter this problem. The above case study is therefore critical in the history of kidney transplant as it was the first truly successful kidney transplant since it was carried out without immunosuppressive medication.
Mechanics
- General anesthesia precedes transplant
- Surgical team monitors oxygen level, blood pressure and heart rate throughout the procedure
- The surgeon places the donor kidney into the recipient’s body by making an incision in the lower part of the abdomen
- The surgeon leaves the failed kidneys in the abdominal cavity unless the patient has complications such as infection, pain, kidney stone and hypertension
- Donor kidney’s arteries, veins and capillaries attached to the new kidney in the lower part of the abdomen
- The surgeons connects the donor kidney’s ureter to the bladder
