Purpose:
The main purpose of this assignment is to assist the student in exploring her/his philosophy of nursing and to track changes that have evolved in this philosophy over time. It is also intended to demonstrate how the student's personal philosophy may reflect that of a particular nursing theorist. The assignment is also intended to focus the student on goals for future professional growth.
The students Philosophy of Nursing will be formally written consistent with the current APA style as well as presented on the, discussion board (in a condensed, summary form). The submission will be reviewed for originality by SafeAssign. Please upload the file to the course website for grading. A copy of this assignment will be kept by the Nursing Department and reviewed as part of the outcomes criteria.
Objectives:
At the end of the assignment, the student will:
1. Articulate their philosophy of nursing
2. identify how their philosophy of nursing relates to nursing theory
3. Describe how their philosophy relates to nursing practice
4. Discuss opportunities for lifelong learning in one's own professional nursing practice.
Instructions:
In a formal APA style paper (approximately 5-7 pages in length - not including title page or reference page):
1. Describe your current philosophy of nursing. (I.e. what do you see as the essence of nursing? How would you define what nursing means to you?)
2. Identify a nurse theorist that you have come to know (or would have liked to study) through your undergraduate program and briefly summarize the theorists work. How do you see your own philosophy in comparison to your selected theorist? Please use your own words (paraphrase) as direct quotes do not demonstrate your understanding of the chosen theorist (One direct quote of no more than two sentences may be used)
3. Identify specific changes in your philosophy over time, as well as throughout this program.
4. Describe how you have enhanced your nursing practice through self-development.
5. Discuss your future professional goals.
6. Use at least 1 professional reference.
