Have you ever experienced a lot of stress in your life? What was the cause of the stress and how did you manage it? For how long did the stress last? Have you ever heard of depression? Have you ever come across someone who is depressed? If yes, what did you do to help the person? I have asked these questions because the subject of depression is rarely discussed and there is a possibility that some of the students here might be suffering from depression.

Presentation

Hello, I hope you are doing good and ready for today’s presentation. For those who do not know me, my name is __ and I would like to talk to you about depression. Before I start, I would like to ask you several questions, have you ever experienced a lot of stress in your life? What was the cause of the stress and how did you manage it? For how long did the stress last? Have you ever heard of depression? Have you ever come across someone who is depressed? If yes, what did you do to help the person? I have asked these questions because the subject of depression is rarely discussed but there are many people especially the youngsters who are suffering from depression. Research shows that the increase in the rate of depression cases particularly among the young people is alarming. Therefore, it is important to examine depression especially among students and figure out how to reduce the rising cases of depression.

When a student is suffering from depression:

  • He or she can find it challenging to study
  • They can experience sleeping challenges
  • They can be stressed to a point of having suicidal thoughts

Reducing depression cases calls for a collaborative approach:

  • There is need for students to be educated on the causes, symptoms and how to manage depression
  • Educational institutions should incorporate psychiatric evaluation and psychotherapy  

Depression is often mistaken for normal stress. However, it should be noted that stress is a factor or rather a symptom of stress. While stress lasts for a short period of time, depression is stress that lasts for a period of more than two weeks. Furthermore, depression can be caused by genetics, changes in brain chemicals and stressful life events. Depression is a condition that affects people of all ages. For students, depression can be very detrimental since it can lead to poor performance in academics. When a student is suffering from depression, they lose concentration which affects how they perform in their studies. Also, when a person is undergoing depression, they can think a lot thus affecting their sleeping patterns. There are people who will have trouble sleeping when they are suffering from depression while others might tend to oversleep. This can be very hazardous for students since students need to be fresh when studying.

Suicide is also a common issue that has been found among depression patients. Many will tend to perceive life as meaningless when they experience stress for a long period of time. It is important for students who experience any form of stress to open up to their close friends of seek psychological counselling. Moreover, students should also try and avoid intimidating others since it has also been associated to be a major cause of depression among students.

The best way to reduce stress and depression among students is by educating them on the causes, symptoms, how to prevent and manage depression. With this information, the students will be able to differentiate from normal stress and depression. It is also important for educational institutions to incorporate psychiatric evaluation and psychotherapy to help students who are undergoing stressful conditions.

Depression is a common issue among people especially students. However, the issue is rarely addressed while its consequences affect many students in myriad ways. When students are stressed, they will find it challenging to concentrate in their studies and thus the consequence will be a drop in their academic performance. It is important for schools to integrate psychiatric evaluation to help identifying students who are suffering from depression. It is also important to have psychotherapy programs to help students who are suffering from depression. The curriculum should also incorporate teachings on the causes, symptoms, prevention and treatment of depression. By doing this, there are high chances that depression cases among the young people will be reduced.

Introduction

What do you think will happen to you if you feel that your peers consider you inferior? What if some of your fellow students bully you? Are you likely to be stressed by the situation or even become a victim of depression? Do you think it is good to discriminate and bully others? I have asked these questions to get your perceptions because I have kept imagining a scenario about bullying and schools that do not take the issue seriously.

Good afternoon! I hope you are all doing fine, personally I am in good health and doing just fine.

Today, I would like us to talk about something a little different. I would like to inquire from you if you have ever interacted with people who have depression? How did you come to the realization that these people are suffering from depression? Did you mind finding out the course of the depression? Are some of the students you have interacted with suffering from depression? I have decided to ask all of you these questions because I have been thinking that there is a probability that some students might be suffering from depression and have decided to keep quiet about the situation. Also, it can be that the bullying issues are the cause of the depression and are not being taken seriously by the management.

Abusive and uncaring relationship is the leading cause of depression

Biological Factors: Genetics, brain chemistry, and hormonal imbalances.

Psychological Factors: Negative thinking, low self-esteem, and past trauma.

Environmental Factors: Stressful life events and chronic adversity.

Medical Conditions: Chronic diseases and certain medications.

 

Substance Abuse: Abuse of alcohol, drugs, or medications.

Effects of depression

Depression is the leading cause of disability globally and is among the leading causes of global burden of disease

Depression can lead to suicide      

1. According to the world health organization (WHO) depression is a common mental disorder that affects nearly everyone at one point in their lifetime. Therefore, it is important to know the different factors surrounding depression such as the causes, symptoms, effects and prevention of depression. Research conducted by WHO shows that more than 264 million people around the world are suffering from depression. This is an indication that depression is a public concern especially when considering the fact that there are rising cases of depression among the youth and teenagers.

2. There are many causes of depression. However, the leading causes of depression is Abusive and uncaring relationships. From this, it is apparent that bullying falls under the category. Therefore, it is important for schools’ management to take into consideration if there are bullying cases and device mechanisms of stopping them. However, it is also important for students to be each one’s keeper and love one another. Students ought to understand that bullying affects the individuals being bullied in myriad ways and the worst being that it can lead them into developing depression. Even though the management can try and look into the issue, this will not be successful without the help of students. It is imperative that students take the initiative of taking care of their peers and reporting any notable bullying cases.

3. WHO notes that depression has numerous adverse consequences one of them being suicide. When someone develops depression, their self-esteem is significantly affected. As a result, many people end up developing notions of committing suicide while a majority of the people with depression end up attempting suicide. Therefore, it is imperative for the people who engage in bullying activities to ask themselves whether they want to be the cause of death for their fellow students.

Even in the cause where one cannot commit suicide, it should be considered that depression is the leading cause of disability globally and is among the leading causes of global burden of disease. Therefore, when one decides to bully another student and they end up developing depression, they are not only affecting the student but many other people including the government. Governments around the world spend a lot of money on healthcare, if we reduce the rate of depression, the money can be used to serve other important purposes.

It is important to understand the different factors surrounding depression, especially causes, symptoms, prevention and cure. The educational institutions should also play a role in putting measures that restrict students from bullying their peers. Students on the other hand, should love one another and report any bullying cases.

I will sum up by reminding you that it is important to study about depression since there are times when a person can be depressed by they think it is normal stress. Try to study the different factors surrounding depression such as causes, symptoms, prevention and cure or rather treatment. It is also important for schools to play a role in putting measures that restrict students from bullying their peers. Students on the other hand, should love one another and report any bullying cases.
