Currently it has been evident that the population of the elderly is growing faster as it has never been. It is now the responsibility of nurses to assure this elderly people live long. Geriatric nurse specialist is a nurse who has advanced knowledge on the care of the elderly. This group of nurses have used their knowledge to develop a plan of care that addresses the different old age categories. They advocate for the elderly and educate the community against the myths related to old age. They also act as clinical practitioners which entails assessing and identify problems. Mostly they offer rehabilitation services to this elderly people. Above all these nurses do research pertaining the aged people. (Dwyer., D. 2011)
Nurses having a bachelor of science in nursing offer their services to the elderly just like to any other individual of any age. They offer services such as diagnosis, injecting and issuing pre-orders. (Dwyer., D. 2011)
The difference between this two categories of nurses is that geriatric specialist nurses possess the same Bachelor of Science in nursing and have also studied further specializing in care for old age category. They are both found in the day care health centers for the old age only that geriatric nurse specialists have management and leadership positions here. They do research while the BSN category do not engage in research. (Schrier, R.1990)
Nurses have a great impact on the society. Their existence have increased the lifespan of the elderly people. People have also been educated concerning this by the nurses and the society is well informed. (Dwyer., D. 2011)
American Association for Retired Persons (AARP) should chip in to provide funds that will help in expanding services of this nurses. They should also inform the society on the import roles nurses play to the elderly. By doing this they will be giving credit to the nurses.
