NR 509 Discussion cognitive health assesment Aggressive Client Behavior Mr. P. K. was brought to the emergency room with a chief complaint of violence and aggressive behavior that had been there for about 6 hours and seemed to worsen with time. He is directed into an assessment room for a focused history and physical assessment. Barely three minutes into the process, the patient becomes aggressive with verbal violence, threatening to cause harm, cursing, yelling, and not listening. After futile attempts to calm the patient, the NP calls team members for support. Impact of Clients Aggression on the Session A client-provider relationship that promotes collaboration is based on effective communication and a calm environment (DeAngelis, 2019). Any form of aggression will breach the communication approach, destabilize the therapeutic environment and distort the entire process of history and physical examination (Richardson et al., 2019). The first thing that is lost due to violence is mutual trust. The NP may feel intimidated and endangered and may not believe the information gathered from the client. This means that the NP cannot ask the relevant questions to make decisions, and the clinical judgment process will be affected. Communication Approach It is crucial that the NP remains calm but firm without getting angry and maintains a clear exit route when faced with a client that is expressing any form of aggression. Enhancing communication with a violent client requires using open-ended questions, highlighting the inappropriateness of aggression and rude language, and refocusing the client’s attention on the session (DeAngelis, 2019).
