Human beings ate social beings and usually established relationships with one other. Friendship plays a critical role in determining the type of relationships established. Friends are valuable, and the relationships between one another are rooted in reciprocity and exchange. Friends are sources of social support, acceptance as well as trust. Research has indicated that friendship is great for people’s health and happiness. This article focuses on how people develop friendships and the big five personality traits. Friendship has various similar and different elements to a romantic relationship. Romantic relationships and friendships are both relationships characterized by closeness, voluntarily and non-kin basis. Three bases can be used to illustrate the differences and similarities between friendship and romantic relationships. The first basis is commitment and interdependence. Romantic relationships are more independent than friendships (Harris & Vazire, 2016). This means that the actions and personality of one person influence the other more in romantic relationships than in friendships. Based on the investment model, high relationship satisfaction is associated with high commitment, and one person meets the needs of the other.
