Interview with an Older Adult Part One

A full health assessment is essential when it comes to treating patients. However, for older

adult health care providers should use a geriatric assessment. This assessment emphasizes the

quality of life and focuses on complex problems of the elderly individuals. The purpose of this

paper is to find a person of 70 and use a variety of assessment tools to gather information on him

or her. For my paper I will be interviewing a woman who is 74 years old.

Social History

My client S.P. was a housewife in India and never held a job. She moved to the United

States after her husband passed in 2012 and lives with her oldest son and his family. S.P. has a

total of three children, all boys. She lives with her oldest son full time and visits each of her

younger sons once a year for a month at a time. She is completely financially dependent on her

sons because she never worked a day in her life so she has no retirement money. Her bedroom is

on the first floor because it is difficult for her to climb stairs due to her bad knees. Her daughter

in law helps her with grooming and getting dressed. S.P. has insurance under the Affordable Care

Act, since she is not eligible to have Medicare. During the day she spends most of her time

reading religious books, helping her daughter in law with prepping for dinner, she takes a nap in

the afternoons daily, and if the weather is nice she will go for a walk around her neighborhood.

She does not drive, but her son and his wife take her wherever she needs to go. The family is a

part of one of the Hindu temples in Cincinnati and goes there several times a week. From going

to the temple she has been able to make a few friends of the same age and they get together once a

month to just chit chat and catch up.
