Introduction
A nurse is responsible to answer all the questions that are posed within their work environment. Due to this they are supposed to adhere to certain codes of rules that act as guidelines. These guidelines are called ethics. Accountability helps a nurse to be credible and work well under minimal supervision. (Rachel, 2013.)
Things that a nurse is answerable to
There are a number of things a nurse should always be responsible for. These includes working always to enhance the health of his or her patients. It is the responsibility of the nurse to ensure that they issue the correct and up to date pre-operative orders as written by the surgeon. Secondly a nurse is accountable to the society around where he/she works. They are expected by the society to uphold upright moral standards to act as role models. Failure to this will be violating the ethical obligations to which they vowed to adhere to throughout there nursing profession. They are also answerable to the hospital. It is required of them to give out quality service and uphold competence. In this way they will have promoted the hospital brand. (Royal college of nursing, 2015)
Responsibility of nurses in order of importance
A nurse’s first priority lies in saving life and improving the health of his or her patient. They should therefore act with compassion and respect valuing life. At all times a nurse should defend the patient’s rights. They should always contribute in creating good hospital environments and provide quality services. The nurse should be able to work well in a team environment with other health professionals such as surgeons and fellow nurses and the public in promoting community. (ANA, 2013)
