Instructions:
● The following should be used as a guide for completing the cultural health assessment of a family of a culture different than the cultural group you affiliate yourself with.
● The assessment should be done by interviewing at least two people from the family, and if possible through observation of the entire/majority of the family interacting with each other. Complete each section as it applies to the family you plan to assess.
Biocultural Variations and Cultural Aspects of Disease
Prior to completing this section, complete your own internet search and include the culture of the family you are interviewing to identify if there are any indications for your culture for each question below ( .edu, .org or .gov sites only ):
• Answer questions a-d before meeting with the family you are completing the assessment on
• Answer question e during/after the interview.
1. Please answer the following questions – cite sources used to gather evidence to support your responses.
a. Are there any culture specific genetic or acquired conditions that are more prevalent for the cultural group with which the family affiliates itself? Information about genetic and acquired conditions
b. Are there socio-environmental diseases more prevalent among the cultural group that the family affiliates itself with? Information about socio-environmental diseases
c. Are there diseases against which the cultural group that the family affiliates itself with has an increased resistance?
d. Are there cultural variations in the distinct features/physical characteristics of the larger cultural group the family is part of ( skin color, hair texture, height)?
e. Does anyone in the family have any of the culture bound conditions, diseases or syndromes, or physical characteristics commonly found in their cultural or ethnic group (do they have anything from a-d above)? If yes, describe

a. Who are the members of the family and what are their ages?
List each family member and their relationship within the family
(i.e. mother, father, son, daughter, etc.) DO NOT USE NAMES ( initials only )
b. Which members of the family were present for the interview? (You must interview at least 2 family members who live in the same house)
c. What is the family form/structure? (from presentation in class or online – refer to summary sheet)
d. Is there evidence of supportive family bonds? Give examples.
3. Cultural Affiliations
a. What cultural group(s) does the family affiliate with?
b. What is the preferred term of the cultural group?
c. Where were members of the immediate family born? Where (if anywhere) else have they lived?
4. Communication
a. What is the language spoken by the members of the family?
b. Is this the language commonly spoken in his/her home?
c. Based on your observation - What are the styles of verbal and non-verbal communication used? Do the verbal and non-verbal messages match, are they congruent? Is communication clear? Give examples.
d. Based on your observation - Are family members listened to and understood? Give examples.
e. How do family members feel about communicating with health care providers who are not of the same cultural background?
5. Developmental Considerations
a. What is the family developmental stage according to Duvall? Are the family members meeting the developmental tasks for their Duvall family stage? Be sure to address each task and to give examples that show how the family is meeting (or not meeting) each task.
b. What are the beliefs and practices associated with developmental life events such as pregnancy, birth, child-rearing practices, and death?
c. What is the cultural perception of aging?
d. How are elderly persons cared for within the cultural group?
6. Educational Background
a. What are the person’s highest educational level earned?
b. How does the person’s educational level affect the family’s knowledge level concerning the health care delivery system, how to obtain needed care, any written material that the family is given (insurance forms, educational materials etc)?
c. How do the educational levels affect health behaviors?
7. Cultural Sanctions and Restrictions
a. How does the family’s cultural group express spirituality, grieving, and modesty?
b. Does the family’s cultural group have restrictions for dietary practices or reproduction?
8. Health-Related Beliefs and Practices and Religious Affiliation
a. To what does the family attribute illness and disease (what factors do they think impact health and illness)?
b. How do the family members describe their own health? What terms/words do they use to describe health and health related conditions?
c. How does the family access needed health services (care provider, insurance, prescription coverage, transportation)?
d. Does the family rely on any cultural healers or complementary health promotion or illness practices? If yes what kind?
9. Kinship and Social Networks
a. Who does the family consider to be their social network (support) and how do they influence his/her health practices? Include supports both inside and outside the family.
b. What is the role of different family members in health and illness and how does the family participate in the promotion of health?
c. What is the family’s religious affiliation (if any)? Are they actively involved in the practice of the religion? What influence does their religion have on his/her health practices?
10. Values Orientation
a. What are the family’s traditional cultural attitudes, values, and beliefs about his/her health and illness status? What do they value?
b. How do the family’s cultural values influence health promotion and disease prevention activities and the treatment of disease?
c. How does the family view work, leisure, education?
d. How does the family perceive and manage change?
e. Based on your observation - are there any value conflicts evident within the family?
11. Post this portion to the discussion board:
Identify your culture, the culture of the family interviewed along with initials and ages of family members interviewed. Summarize what you’ve learned about this cultural group during your assessment of the family. Include implications for providing culturally competent care to this cultural group. The post should be at least 200 words. Provide a response to one peer’s summary post that identifies one similarity and one difference in the considerations you each identified for culturally competent care.
