Introduction
Emotional intelligence is the skill developed by an individual to be able to identify their own and other people’s emotions. This skill is essential in a health care environment since different patients come in with different ailments. Mostly, people relate sick people to only physical malfunctioning forgetting that the mind has a great percent in the healing process (Goleman. 2009). The ability to be able to read other people’s emotions will be very helpful to a nurse in the process of interrogating and diagnosing them. A high emotional intelligence doctor is able to label emotions appropriately thus enabling him/her to make the right judgment. EI is divided into three. First is the ability model. This was discovered by Peter Salovey and John Mayer, it mainly aims at a person’s skill to process a message related to the emotion and make use of it in changing the society. Secondly is the character model which was discovered by Konstantin Vasily Petrides, It majorly focuses on the characterization of an individual and how people views themselves. The last one combines both the skill and character that an individual possesses. People with high EI are usually healthy and are good leaders. (Goleman. 2009)
Theories of emotional intelligence.
There are several theories attached to EI, among this theories is the ability of a person to understand their feelings and know how to control them. Such a person is able to control his/her feelings not to affect others. Such people have confidence and are humorous. Another one is the ability to control oneself, able to append judgments and act appropriately. They are subject to transformation, trustworthiness and lastly they have integrity. The third theory is inner inspiration in that an individual is able to work without supervision. They Have a passion in what they are doing and are happy for the outcome. Always they are curious for knowledge and usually take failure positively. Emotional
Intelligence incorporates a person with sympathizing nature and people have this are usually caring for other people’s feelings and serve their clients diligently. (Goleman. 2009)
Positive and Negative impacts of EI on team work
EI individuals are good schemers since they can easily read other people’s emotions and know how to respond accordingly. The fact that they are able to control their emotions assists them in befriending others. This makes them have many friends and easily make new ones. It now lies with this individual to decide if they are going to use it positively or negatively. In a health care environment a health physician or practitioner can use this ability to make their patients friends to him or her. By doing this the patients can easily be free to free their souls by telling the person their personal issues. In terms of leadership since this person is loved by many they are easily voted in. If they are negatively motivated then they will sway the entire staff and deceive them to do wrong things such as embezzling the hospitals funds, proving low quality services to their clients and engage frequently in boycotts. (Segan., et al. 2015)
Positive and Negative impacts of EI on Decision Making
Most of the leader’s choice of decisions relies mostly on their EI. Someone’s past and what they went through also contributes to decision making. A leader in a health care with high emotional intelligence will make good decisions favorably to the whole staff and the patients and even the society around. A low emotional intelligence leader’s decisions will always be affected by their emotions. They are usually not will to take risks. An example is in a case whereby a leader gets into conflicts with someone outside the health care environment but due to low emotional intelligence he/she carries the anger to the staff and even clients. This results to poor performance in work and even worsens the conditions of patients in the hospital. This is contrary to the ethics related to their profession which states that a medical practitioner should at all times work towards saving life and improving the health status of a patient. Leaders with high emotional intelligence are usually happy. Over excitement can hinder their work in health care environment since they will not be in their right minds to concentrate on their work. This will also result to poor performance at work. (Segan., et al. 2015)
Impacts of EI on Communication skills
Good communication skills is an important virtue a health practitioner should have both within and outside the heath care environment. A leader with good interpersonal skills will be at the advantage of communicating well with their subjects. Persons with high emotional intelligence always have high self-esteem and are good communicators as compare to those with low EI. Such leaders with high EI are usually loved by the people they interact with and this results in conducive environment to work in. The latter usually find themselves in conflicts and are not happy working since they cannot communicate well. Thereby possessing good communication skills is a plus to a leader in a health care environment. (Segan., et al. 2015)
Conclusion
High emotional intelligence is required for a leader in a health care environment. It is required of every individual working in a health care environment to work towards achieving this.
