In art, the term scene is used to refer to the specific moment whereby an action takes place; usually, one action takes place in one time and place. Therefore, it is a short story within a larger story. Deducing from the scene Sedari fights with his mother over Halloween candy; several factors have been achieved regarding scene construction presented by Truby. First, when constructing a scene, the writer needs to determine how the specific scene in question will further the hero’s general development.

From Sedaris’s Halloween candy scene, the author is trying to further the narrative’s main concept to emphasize the notion that people should observe and judge themselves prior to judging others. In the scene, the author describes the entire Halloween season and the events that usually surround the season. He narrates about how mean they were when they were requested for candy by the Tomkeys. He always perceived the Tomkeys to be weird. However, when they were asked for candy, they went to great extents to refuse to help them with candy. This was an indication that they were also not good people and were weird in some way basing on the fact that it was only a day after Halloween. Through this scene, Sedaris learns that they are also odd.

Truby, in his scene construction article notes that a mini-story should be interesting. This can be attained by making the beginning of a scene to frame what the entire scene regards. The scene begins with the narrator revealing that it was Halloween day, and people were preparing to celebrate the day according to the Halloween culture. From the beginning of the scene, the author tells the audience what the entire scene will be about. At the end of the scene, Sedaris tries to intimidate the Tomkeys, this aspect has been hinted from the beginning of the scene when the narrator asserts that he was planning to disguise the Tomkeys. According to Truby, it is good to start as close to the end as possible when constructing a scene. Therefore, it can be concluded that the author attained this factor by starting with the end before proceeding to the details of the scene. This particular scene was constructed to show how Sedaris began to realize that everyone was weird in their own way. Different kinds of dialogue have been employed in the scene, inclusive of moral and story dialogues.
