What drew you to explore the opportunities you did?
It has always been my dream and interest to work as a Landscape designer after I graduate from college. The fact that my grandfather was doing this particular job and later started his own company in China. I became much interested when we began to visit him often with my father. Since Landscape Horticulture and Design focuses on creative aspects of art and design alongside technical and scientific aspects of horticulture, I believe this would be a massive opportunity for me to put to work my creative and artist eye. The discipline involves planning, design, analysis, implementation and sustainable management of natural and constructed environments. Having been introduced early to many of these activities by my father while growing up, I developed the interest and desire to become a Landscape Horticulturist and Design.
Regarding volunteering to work as a Peer Support at KPU, I believe that Peer Support Program provides students with a chance to seek necessary support and guidance concerning challenges they might be facing while in college. Having received help when I joined KPU. This would be an excellent opportunity for me to use it to help other students too. Besides that, it is an excellent chance for me to meet students who speak fluent English and learn from them. In the long run, I will also benefit in boosting my English Communication skills. Also, Peer Support Program would help improve the social, emotional, and academic experience at KPU. By promoting wellness within the University community and boost student to student support, I find it fulfilling to my heart. I know very well that students go through several problems, some struggle with mental health problems while others go through stress and depression. If they do not have somebody with whom they can speak or share their problems out, University life might turn to be a nightmare for them.
I was drawn to Traditional Chinese Medicine-acupuncture because to me it is like magic in my mind. The whole thing about pricking your acupoint with a needle as a way to treat yourself seems fascinating. TCM also has English and Mandarin language courses, Ancient Chinese philosophy which are critical for one to understand the Traditional Chinese Medicine concept. TCM has a very positive concept of good health, and it considers pain and illness as signs that the body is out of balance. This is something that I really love and having that experience and knowledge to administer treatment just like the way acupuncturists do is lovely. And the fact that I could learn the skills and techniques while still going on with my academics makes the whole thing fascinating.
How might your identified work opportunities enhance the flourishing of yourself and others?
Well, for Peer Support Volunteer I get the chance to listen to my fellow students express some of the problems that they face while at the University. These problems may range from personal to academic. For example, by listening to a student who is going through stress and letting them know some of the problems that I also go through and some of the ways one can take to overcome such problems, I will have helped the student learn ways they can cope with depression. By educating the public on the issue of mental illness, mainly through Under Our Blue Umbrella. We can be sure that the majority of the KPU community would be able to handle and recognize depression. It is through such opportunities that I will also deepen my knowledge about depression and learn about its symptoms, prevalence, and effects, as well as the best ways to cope with it. As an Event Support for KPU, it would be an excellent chance for me to interact with different kinds of people, learn about their culture and interests. Event support would provide me with the right foundation to enhance my communication skills, creative design skills, and build a strong network that would be key to my success in the future. By gaining hands-on skill techniques in TCM, I would be able to administer treatments to my friends and family whenever they experience health-related problems.
What “next steps” can you take to build real connections between such work experiences and your preferred future.
To become a landscape horticultural designer requires one to be hardworking and creative. Being aware of your surrounding and everything that you do. To ensure that I build real connections between the work experiences and my preferred future, I am going to do the following:
- I will focus on expanding my network of friends so that I can increase the chances of getting many clients in my preferred future.
- I am going to continue to learn and practice soft skills in communication which are crucial in my day-to-day work.
- I will enroll in the Traditional Chinese Medicine-acupuncture offered at KPU so that I can develop a solid command of the English Language.
- I am going to increase my level of participation in the Event Support activities at KPU. This way, I will have much to do with a way of putting my creative ability to work.
- I will dedicate more time to the above work experiences so that they can sharpen my skills.
- Consult with my fellow students with whom we share similar preferred future and work experiences and build a working and friendly relationship.
