Giveon, officially known as Giveon Dezmann Evans, is an American R&B singer as well as a songwriter who recently came into the limelight through his feature on Drake’s 2020 single “Chicago Freestyle”. The song did very well and rose to number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100. Giveon performed in the Tiny Desk (Home) concert during NPR Music's Tiny Desk series celebration of Black History Month. The artist performed together with a small band wearing masks and only one vocalist in the background. The performance was electrifying and Giveon seems more alive than ever as the baby-face baritone fills the set with resonance as well as light. All the songs performed by the artist, together with his masked-up band and vocalist, were R&B.
The first song opening the concert was “The Beach” and the first line of the song is ‘I don’t know if it was fireworks or gunshots.’ As the band plays some low key sounds from the guitars, piano, and drums, Giveon enters the stage and spends a few seconds, as if figuring out the best words to start his performance, before he reveals to his fans and the whole world his radiant gratitude. The artist states, "Any moment to do this would be special," he says between songs, "but I think Black History Month ... just celebrating Black culture for this month, I'm really excited to get to do this on this platform." The background vocalist, besides being one, had a soothing voice that perfectly complemented Giveon’s performance hence giving it a lively feeling that most probably makes the audience or viewers forget that the concert was happening from home.
