MOCK EXAM
Question 3
Jill: The person who becomes psychotic must be psychologically fragile. I mean the pit crew
members who are appointed should understand that they cannot blame the work environment
or each other for their behaviour. According to social cognitive learning theory these
candidates are active participants in their work environments and they are able to choose
how they behave regardless of their circumstances.
Sarah: I am afraid you overestimate the individual’s freedom of choice. Social cognitive learning
theorists actually believe that circumstances do determine behaviour
Banti: One must be careful not to overemphasise the role of circumstances. Social cognitive
learning theory says behaviour results from the interaction between the person, the situation
and the person’s behaviour in the situation
Andy: Social cognitive learning theory is not about person-situation interaction. Behaviour is
determined by personal traits such as openness to learning and cognitive ability.
Indicate with whom you agree and disagree:
1. You agree with Sarah but disagree with Andy and Banti
2. You agree with Sarah and Andy but disagree with Banti
3. You agree with Banti and Sarah but disagree with Andy

Jill: Candidates should be able to take into account and act upon factors relevant to effective
functioning in a given situation
Sarah: Candidates should demonstrate a realistic self-efficacy perception and a general expectation
that they can exercise a considerable amount of control over their environments
Mike: Candidates should demonstrate few organically based disturbances such as learnt
helplessness and pessimism
Indicate with whom you agree and disagree:
1. You agree with Sarah but disagree with Jill and Mike
2. You agree with Sarah and Mike but disagree with Jill
3. You agree with Mike but disagree with Jill and Sarah
4. You agree with Jill and Sarah but disagree with Mike
5. You agree with Jill, Sarah and Mike
Question 5
Mike: I am not sure that candidates who are appointed really are active participants with a choice
over the determinants of their own behaviour. From an African perspective behaviour is
determined by the connectedness of the physical and spiritual domains.
Andy: The idea that the individual is actively responsible for his/her situation is typical of the
